Share your own stories through Tagwhat’s easy-to-use on-line publishing interface designed to deliver the web’s great stories to real life places.

Where does all this content come from?

To fill the world with great content that fits best at location, Tagwhat partners with media companies, integrates open sources of content, and makes available to the public a simple self-publishing interface at http://publish.tagwhat.com. Tagwhat also has an in-house team of hungry photojournalists that digs up the most interesting and quirky stories our world has to offer and helps publishers develop and incorporate great multimedia into Tagwhat. Some of Tagwhat’s current partners include the Associated Press, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, World Freerunning Parkour Federation, and numerous universities and tourism organizations worldwide.

Can I choose to only see certain types of content?

Definitely! People are interested in different things, so your content experience should be different. Tagwhat lets you decide what content appears by choosing your own interest channels. Pick Food, Music, and Sports, and the rest disappear. Easily change your interests on-the-fly.

Can I share content with my friends?

Definitely! Each Tagwhat “Tag” comes with a digital postcard you can add your own photo and personal message to. Stumble across the place in Austin where Janis Joplin first got her start and take a picture of yourself standing on the same stage. Share the postcard with your friends through Facebook or e-mail. They’ll get to see the content along with your photo and message.

Where can I use Tagwhat?

Anywhere! Tagwhat coverage started in the U.S. but is expanding rapidly. Tap on “Visit” from the top menu in the app to virtually explore stories from some of your favorite cities.

Does it cost money to create content in Tagwhat?

Nope! Adding content to any of Tagwhat’s house channels is totally free. Many brands and organizations prefer to have their own branded channels inside Tagwhat. These channels are available for a licensing fee.

The Company

When was Tagwhat founded?

Tagwhat was founded in 2009 by Dave Elchoness, Don Cramer, and Angus Shee driven by a unique vision for how people were meant to interact with digital content tied to location from their mobile devices. They have spent years researching mobile user behavior and building and improving the tools necessary to easily create and deliver digital content in the context of location. Tagwhat is headquartered in sunny Boulder, Colorado.

What’s the Tagwhat vision?

The web has inspired everyone from individuals to corporations to create massive volumes of content. Today, this content lives inside countless online silos including personal websites, YouTube, Tumblr, even Facebook and Twitter. Much of this media relates directly to the world around us: the interview with an artist describing her inspiration for the mosaic next door, historic photos of the street you’re standing on, or video clips from Universal Pictures movies that were filmed at the places you walk by. Tagwhat looks to bridge this gap between the physical and digital worlds by making it extremely easy to deliver premium multimedia at real-world locations to nearby mobile users.

The Technology

This is incredible! How does Tagwhat work?

The Tagwhat mobile application delivers location-based content based on where users are standing by employing GPS and a digital compass. Content is displayed in order of proximity in a visual image-based interface. Interest channels can be toggled on and off to quickly filter through different streams of content. Tap on a Tag to launch a full multimedia experience comprised of video, images, audio, and narratives. Content is easily shared to Facebook or e-mail via a personalizable digital postcard that accompanies each Tag. Every Tag also includes an embedded web portal that delivers the user to additional content, communication, and commerce.

Is there an online version of Tagwhat?

Yes. Every Tag and postcard has a unique URL that a publisher and user can share with their friends, network, or fans. So content isn’t limited to mobile users. The same mobile multimedia experience can be enjoyed online.
